FIRST TASK TEAMS MEETING FOR NATO-SfP
“BLACK SEA ECOSYSTEM PROCESSES AND FORECASTING /
OPERATIONAL DATABASE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
” PROJECT

ERDEMLI/TURKEY 04-07 MARCH 1999

Task Groups formed initially within the framework of the NATO-SfP Black Sea Ecosystem Processes and Forecasting / Operational Database Management System project met at IMS-Erdemli during 04-07 March 1999. Objectives of the project were presented by Prof. Ilkay Salihoglu. He pointed at the basic difference between previous NATO TU Black Sea project and present project, which is the “Dissemination of results to end-users, Environmental Management Agencies and authorities”. More than 2 agencies from each country supported the project.
Co-directors of the Project - Prof. I.Salihoglu (IMS-METU), Dr. A. Mikaelyan (P.P. Shirshov-RAS) and Dr. V. Vladimirov (MHI-NASU) made introductory presentations of the project tasks. Specific objectives of the project were also explained briefly by Prof. I.Salihoglu. Biogeochemical processes within oxic, sub-oxic and anoxic layers of the Black Sea are among the main interests of the Project. This is another new approach for the project.

In order to achieve these objectives:

1. Modeling component of the Project that was the component of the previous program should continue and improve by utilising the data and knowledge that will be obtained during the project.
2. Process oriented field and laboratory experiments, which were, absent in the previous are another new tasks in the project. They (TASKII) are related with the biogeochemical processes within the euphotic, suboxic (S0Z) and anoxic zones
3. Dissemination and the distribution of data, materials, and results among the project participants are defined as the one of the ultimate goals of the program.

Working plans of each Task Team with timetables were elaborated during the meeting. Meeting materials are available for project participants in the private part of Project Web Site.
